What Do the Snapchat Emojis Mean? (2022)
What is the Use of a Snapchat Emoji?
Unlike traditional emojis used in other messaging apps, Snapchat emojis have a definite purpose. Called Friend emojis, the photo-centric ephemeral messaging platform utilizes emojis as an entertaining way to define your relationship with other Snapchat users. The Snapchat emojis are assigned based on how you and your friend interact with each other on the platform. Depending on the frequency of Snaps and messages, you are assigned a friend category along with an emoji to represent it.
Snapchat Friend Emoji Meanings
Snapchat has a variety of friend emojis, and each emoji has its own hidden meaning. We have detailed all the Snapchat emojis below, and you can check them out right here:
Best Friends (Smile) 😊
Snapchat shows a smile emoji next to a person when they’re one of your best friends. Do keep in mind that this doesn’t mean both of you are the top best friend of each other. You will see this emoji next to multiple Snapchat contacts as long as you frequently send them Snaps.
Besties (Yellow Heart) 💛
If you are the top best friend of each other, you will see the yellow heart icon to indicate that the person is your bestie. Needless to say, this is probably the person you are sharing your deepest secrets with.
BFF (Red Heart) ❤️
Those who manage to be each other’s bestie (top friend) for two consecutive weeks will get a red heart next to their name in the chats list. As you might have guessed already, you will go from besties (yellow heart) to BFF (red heart) for staying consistent.
Super BFF (Two Pink Hearts) 💕
Outside Snapstreaks, Super BFF is the ultimate symbol for friendship on the platform. Awarded when you have been each other’s top best friend for 2 months in a row, you will see two pink hearts when you unlock this friend emoji category.
Mutual BFs (Sunglasses Face) 😎
If one of your best friends also happens to be one of their best friends, you will see the sunglasses emoji, showing that you are mutual best friends. This emoji is fairly common among people with common interests or those attending the same school or college.
Mutual Besties (Grimace) 😬
In case your top best friend is also their top best friend, you will see a grimacing emoji next to their name. This often happens in tightly-knit friends circles, typically with three or four people in the group. As long as the friendship dynamic is clear, seeing this emoji next to someone’s name isn’t something you should worry about.
Baby 👶
Baby emoji shows up in Snapchat when you have newly become a Snapchat friend of a person. Adding each other to the friends list is important in Snapchat. If not, the messages you send will remain in pending status.
Birthday (Cake) 🎂
As the name suggests, a cake emoji appears next to your friend’s name on their birthday. If you’re someone who finds it hard to keep track of birthdays, discovering this feature is likely to be a godsend for you.
Gold Star 🌟
A golden star appears if someone other than you has replayed your friend’s Snap in the past 24 hours. It may (or may not) be a good conversation starter, depending on your relationship dynamic with your friend.
Smirk 😏
Snapchat used to have a smirk emoji that was brutal, to say the least. It showed up when you are one of their best friends, but they are not one of yours. Snapchat has since removed the emoji, presumably due to broken friendships and relationships this must have caused.
Snapstreak (Fire) 🔥
A fire emoji appears next to the contact’s name when a Snapstreak starts. As we explained in our Snapchat streaks explainer, a Snapstreak begins when you send and receive Snaps from a person at least once for 3 consecutive days.
100 Snapstreak (100 Emoji) 💯
Those dedicated enough to maintain a Snapstreak for 100 consecutive days will see the 100 emoji instead of the fire icon on the 100th day. It is undoubtedly a moment worth celebrating, and you can learn how to share Snapstreak in your Story from our linked guide.
Hourglass ⌛
Hourglass emoji helps you identify Snapstreaks that are about to end. An hourglass emoji appears next to a person’s name when you have spent 20 hours without sending a Snap. In other words, you will have 4 hours left before the Snapstreak expires. And as the Snapchat Streak expires, the hourglass emoji disappears too. If you lose your Snapstreak and want to get it back, follow our linked guide for detailed instructions.
